Climatic evolution in the Australian region over the last 94 ka - spanning human occupancy -, and unveiling the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
De Deckker, P.; Moros, M.; Perner, K.; Blanz, T.; Wacker, L.; Schneider, R.; Barrows, T.t.; O’loingsigh, T.; Jansen, E..
The Quaternary is well known for being a period of the geological record that saw significant and alternating climatic fluctuations. Here, we concentrate on the last 94 millennia that saw Australia and its surrounding seas undergo significant environmental changes. Importantly also it is during that this period of time includes the arrival and settlement of humans in Australia. Following on from Marine Isotopic Stage 4 (MIS4) that saw, over the period of 71-59 ka BP, a significant eustatic sea level drop (similar to 100 m), low sea-surface temperatures as well as glacial conditions on land, Australia experienced wet conditions again, but eventually progressively entered into a glacial phase. By then, humans had arrived on this large continent and later the...

Community structure across a large-scale ocean productivity gradient: Marine bird assemblages of the Southern Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Hyrenbach, K. David; Veit, Richard R.; Weimerskirch, Henri; Metzl, Nicolas; Hunt, George L., Jr..
Our objective was to understand how marine birds respond to oceanographic variability across the Southern Indian Ocean using data collected during an 16-day cruise (4-21 January 2003). We quantified concurrent water mass distributions, ocean productivity patterns, and seabird distributions across a heterogeneous pelagic ecosystem from subtropical to sub-Antarctic waters. We surveyed 5155 kin and sighted 15,606 birds from 51 species, and used these data to investigate how seabirds respond to spatial variability in the structure and productivity of the ocean. We addressed two spatial scales: the structure of seabird communities across macro-mega scale (1000 s km) biogeographic domains, and their coarse-scale (10 s km) aggregation at hydrographic and...

Royer, Francois.
[1] The spatial and temporal dynamics of Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, are here investigated through data analysis and statistical modelling. The local, regional and global scales are considered successively. A phenomenological approach is favoured, as well the extended use of image processing tools and estimation theory techniques. Their potential role in partially observed or ill-defined problems in marine ecology is presented and discussed. The acute need for frequency-explicit methods is in particular stressed out. Hypothesis testing and significance testing of ecological space/time processes are further discussed. [2] The first chapter depicts how surface fronts can structure the pelagic habitat: dedicated detection and mapping tools are...

Bogazzi, E..
Several attributes of populations of sedentary organisms differentiate benthic fisheries from those approached by the classic theory, inspired by fin-fisheries. The assessment and management of sedentary resources require the application of non-conventional methodological tools. Understanding the fishing process, in particular, is central to the analysis and management of those fisheries. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the fishing process and its impact on stocks of the Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) fishery. Data and information utilized included: (i) historical data from commercial vessels and experimental fishing; (ii) positional, catch and effort data, and additional information corresponding to fleet activity between 1995...

Derisio, C..
The Península Valdés tidal front was studied in its rol in the control of the spatial distribution, abundance, assemblages, diversity and life histories of the zooplankton community using samples from two oceanographic surveys. Although the front showed in general high zooplankton abundances, highest values, mainly due to the presence of immature stages of copepods, were recorded in the transitional and stratified zones coinciding with highest values of chlorophyll a. The zooplankton groups showed a distinctive spatial distribution across the front. The results showed that this front did not exert any control on zooplankton composition and diversity, but did on the abundance. In the homogeneous zone the harpacticoid copepods were more abundant, followed by...

Intense deformation field at oceanic front inferred from directional sea surface roughness observations ArchiMer
Rascle, Nicolas; Molemaker, Jeroen; Marie, Louis; Nouguier, Frederic; Chapron, Bertrand; Lund, Bjorn; Mouche, Alexis.
Fine scale current gradients at the ocean surface can be observed by sea surface roughness. More specifically, directional surface roughness anomalies are related to the different horizontal current gradient components. This paper reports results from a dedicated experiment during the LASER (LAgrangian Submesoscale ExpeRiment) drifter deployment. A very sharp front, 50 m wide, is detected simultaneously in drifter trajectories, sea surface temperature and sea surface roughness. A new observational method is applied, using sun glitter reflections during multiple airplane passes to reconstruct the multi-angle roughness anomaly. This multi-angle anomaly is consistent with wave-current interactions over a front, including both cross-front convergence and...

Reta, R.; Perrotta, R.G.; Garciarena, A.D..
Results obtained during a research cruise carried out along the coastal area of Mar del Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in November 1999 are presented. The objective of the research cruise was to estimate chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) abundance with acoustic methods and establish its relation to the hydrographic conditions. The information gathered was complemented with data of catches obtained by a commercial vessel that operated simultaneously in the study area. Environmental data from other research cruises and satellite information were also taken into account to obtain contemporary sea surface temperature and wind speed and direction data. The main species of catches of the research cruise and commercial vessel were horse mackerel (Trachurus...

Guerrero, R.A.; Piola, A.R..
The current knowledge on the argentine continental shelf water masses is summarized in this paper. These water masses are characterized as a function of water types fed by the boundary currents and the modifications due to continental runoff, and water energy exchange with the atmosphere. Based on sea surface salinity distributions and the temperature-salinity characteristics, three masses are described: coastal waters, mid-shelf waters and slope waters. The main freshwater sources found along the coast are identified, as well as high salinity formation areas. The vertical stratification, mainly controlled by temperature, is analyzed along the annual cycle. The stratification cycle is mainly driven by the heat exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean....

OceanDocs
Bava, J..
The objective was to use the synoptic capability of NOAA-AVHRR images, and the physical variables inferred from them, in order to achieve spatial and temporal analysis that may allow correlating the satellite variables with oceanographic processes and biological or fishing data. Methodologies of image processing were developed to make possible the use of AVHRR information for the standardized and reliable generation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images (using bands 3 to 5 in the thermal infrared), and water reflectance images (using optic bands 1 and 2) as an index of surface turbidity in coastal zones. A methodology was also generated in order to obtain gradients images derived from SST images, which allows the identification of oceanographic fronts....
